"Those of us who are here today intend to reclaim [American] values and rededicate ourselves to their realization. We are here to pledge our efforts to rebuild an America that works to embody and protect the American Idea. And we are also here to send a message to those who ignore and dishonor the American Idea: we will resist your assaults with every fiber of our beings."
Sheila Kennedy
"On this bittersweet day... celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr., a man who faced down tyrants of every stripe, a man whose vision of American equality and justice will never be silenced... we remind misguided souls of an everlasting truth, that the arc of the moral universe is long, and that it bends toward justice... For as long as I have breath, I say yes. Will you say yes too?"
Phillp Gulley
"As a Christian, I find strength in the words of the prophet Amos when he said: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (Amos 5:24 NIV). Justice is not a passive act; it is active, relentless, and unwavering. It calls us to confront systems of oppression, to speak truth to power, and to declare that hate will not have the final word."
Pastor Greene
"When you don't know what to do, I implore you to look to your Black brothers and sisters because we know what to do."
"We are the descendants of the survivors of the Middle Passage.
We are the descendants of the survivors of Reconstruction and Jim Crow.
We are the descendants of the survivors of Bloody Sunday and the Civil Rights movement.
We stay resilient in our movement."
"We will celebrate a prince of peace, and we will follow his guide for justice for all. And we resist, reclaim, and rebuild the dream and the promise of America."
Dana Black
Let’s reclaim civility, relationships, and empathy.
In the 1930’s, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan said that the structure, beliefs, rituals, customs and culture of Judaism constantly require “reconstructing” in each new era, so that Judaism itself will continue to retain its freshness and relevance to each new generation. This same reconstructing applies to society and culture.
Resist the influences of those who would divide us. Tone down the vitriol and rhetoric. Stop naming and blaming and start relating. As my mother used to say, if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all. Calling out injustice doesn’t mean we have to throw people under the bus. Stop blaming—start engaging.
Rabbi Aaron Spiegel
Hoosiers for Democracy (H4D) believes in the pro-democracy movement that is gaining momentum in our state and across the country. Indiana and our sister ‘red states’ are laboratories for resisting anti-democratic rule and preserving our hard-won freedoms. Democracy starts at the local level. Help us grow the movement!
